Oh, maybe your "extra step" should be part of the Original recipe.

leave spices & flour aside.
Pop cake into oven.
Remove cake, turn into a bowl,
adding Dry ingredients and return to oven in a Fresh baking pan.

Nadine, I'm sure the success of the cake is the Canadian maple syrup used in the frosting!!
