I keep my blog as a personal record of what I'm up to, which might be seen as working towards "An elegant sufficiency, content, retirement, rural quiet, friendship, books, ease and alternate labour, useful life"

I'm certainly not there yet.  There is quite some way to go!

Bye bye sunshine

DSC00382

Overcast skies today and rain in the forecast for the next couple of days, which must mean it’s time for home.

DSC00383

Well, that was the idea – we sat for an age this morning waiting for our car and wondering if we were really meant to stay a while longer!

DSC00393

After breakfast in Studio City with Mary, I stood on the pavement and waved goodbye as they left me standing on the pavement.  My hero was going to wave a magic wifi wand over there chez Valentine and in the meantime, I was left standing with an hour to spend on a street with not only one great bookshop but a Paper Source too – how difficult could that be?

Purchases will be revealed in due course, but I was sufficiently intrigued by this and this that they found their way into my basket immediately and subsequently squeezed into my check in bag.

In the meantime, partial success was reported in the wifi zone.  Phew!

Then, finally, it was time to head for the airport to return our rental car and make our way home again.  And because a journey in LA is never dull, here’s one or two sights along the way.

DSC00381

A cute number plate, don’t you think?

DSC00385

Shortly followed by another interesting one.

It’s always interesting to look at the billboards in this city of visual media, if only to catch a glimpse of what we’re likely to watching in the next few months.  Johnny Depp’s latest is heavily hyped here, alongside the remake of Footloose, which premiered last night, I read.

DSC00397

I’m not sure if the central character adorning both seats on the pavement and the billboards is the same one as we saw in Shrek, but the clever personality conveyed by the images of Puss in Boots rings a bell for sure.

DSC00386

Of course, as soon as I saw Antonio Banderas’ name, I knew it will be fun.

Further fun in the form of many ads for Newcastle Brown Ale – good old Newcie Brown seems to be having a publicity drive over here and each of the series of billboards provokes a smile!

DSC00396

Last but not least, one for Mary, whose reaction to any form of slight suggestion that we might call into a Chuck-E-Cheese’s is worth watching.  Suffice to say that I can picture the scene right now, provoked by the mere sight of the place.

DSC00410

So I offer reassurance that we accept her advice and didn’t go anywhere near the place today.  Especially since, having completed the wifi magic herself, she’ll now kindly come to my aid and rescue my camera battery charger, accidentally left plugged into the hotel room wall socket this morning.  What a star!

For one minute I thought I was going to have to come back to get it Winking smile

An LA kind of day

DSC00366

Might begin on the patio, waiting for our car to arrive and wondering what this strange little area of the hotel is really for – until someone comes along and lights his cigarette and it all becomes clear.

DSC01350

Today it will start with turning right, not left into Santa Monica Boulevard, heading for the ocean for a short time before turning towards downtown.  At this hour on a Monday morning, many of the locals are out power walking, jogging or doing their taichi under the palm trees.

DSC00370

As we turn right into San Vicente, we drive past the smart and spacious homes which suggest wealthy inhabitants.  Their gardeners are out trimming the hedges, watering the lawns and tidying the driveways.  The joggers are out on the road in the cycle lane, because curiously, the cyclists appear to prefer riding on the pavement.  Funny, that.

DSC01365

We’ve decided to join the smart set at the Brentwood Country Mart for breakfast at the FarmShop, recommended by the Los Angeles Magazine as one of the best breakfasts in town right now.  In just a few short minutes we’re sitting in between the ladies with their egg-white omelettes and the guy reading a screenplay.  Some are sitting reading ipads or behind their laptops in spite of the note on the menu

DSC01357

We too are in breach of the recommendation as we’re still trying to contact our friend Kristy, texting her to arrange a meeting tonight.  We’ve each left voicemail messages here and there but somehow haven’t managed to speak to one another yet.

DSC01358

Meanwhile there are important decisions to make.  Aren’t American menus great?  Our breakfast tastes as good as it sounds, believe me.

DSC01370

After an hour on the freeway, we visit an old haunt in Burbank from years ago when Edward was young.  Can you imagine a small boy’s reaction to a shop entrance like this?  Fry’s Electronics have several outlets, each one themed differently.

DSC01372

More mundane shopping in Glendale then, armed with a short list of fairly dull items more easily/cheaply/effectively bought here than at home.

DSC01389

We resist the temptation to equip ourselves for Halloween, however.

After a quick zip into Michaels Arts and Crafts armed with my 40% off one item coupon (I saved $2 – didn’t buy much!) we drove back through a variety of rich and poor suburbs to meet Mary.  As we drove along Beverly Boulevard, we spotted these two beauties catching the attention of passing traffic.

DSC01381

Looking more closely, they were heading to join a queue of other smartly dressed people waiting by a gate.

DSC01382

A bit of reasoning now: this is the entrance to CBS studios…the crowd are dressed well…it’s late Monday afternoon…hmmm, didn’t we see Dancing with the Stars trailed on TV this morning?  Sure enough, that’s what they’re waiting for!

DSC01387

We’re meeting Mary in Larchmont Village, a delightful small community with a row of interesting, individual shops set out village style.  This one was having a “trunk sale”.

DSC01393

After an hour or so with Mary, who arrived fresh from her day’s teaching, we headed off back to Santa Monica along Wilshire Boulevard.

DSC00374

Past the La Brea Tar Pits – I always think of the Beverly Hillbillies when I pass by here!

DSC00378

Past the lighting installation outside the LA Art Museum.  Amazing.

DSC00380

Finally, stop – start through all the traffic lights all the way to the end of this road where the sun is setting over the ocean.

We’ve made contact with Kristy and are thrilled to meet up with her, catching up on the news and hearing all about her work.  As we sit chatting, the party people in the hotel are just heading out, there are people celebrating a birthday (rather noisily!) and we reflect on our good fortune to be here in the company of such a delightful young woman.

It’s also now past our bedtime, so after catching ten minutes or so of Dancing with the Stars in the comfort of our hotel room, we turn in for the night after another marvellous LA day.

Too tired to salsa

DSC01284

Another lovely Californian morning.

DSC01291

We took the Wilshire Boulevard route this morning for a change, collected Mary from her apartment and headed northwards up the valley towards Camarillo.  We were meeting Diana and Brad for lunch in Santa Barbara but had the idea that we might sneak in a little shopping first.

DSC01292

With reduced prices and special offers there was plenty to tempt us and being of similar mind today, Mary and I chose the same top and trousers.  We could now play a pair of those spooky sisters who dress alike and really embarrass you know who!  Perhaps it’s as well we live so far apart.

DSC01295

There was time to mooch around this pleasant outdoor shopping centre before meeting our friends and one shop in particular caught our eye.  Not only did it appear to have a disproportionate number of pet accessories like

DSC01302

and

DSC01303

there was also a very cosy and practical Christmas present idea which might prove useful for the man who has everything (because he most certainly doesn’t have one of these)

DSC01304

We all agreed that the camouflage print could prove beneficial – one might want to hide when wearing such a thing don’t you think?

DSC01305

Setting the satnav for the restaurant proved challenging too, because The Voice suddenly took to wishing us “Goodbye”, which wasn’t so helpful when we were expecting her to instruct us to turn right or left. Hmm.

DSC01306

We kept her interest as far as the Art and Letters Cafe, a great place for lunch set in a beautiful courtyard in central Santa Barbara.  Diana and Brad arrived shortly after us and we spent a couple of happy hours in their company – how lucky we are to have such delightful friends.

DSC01315

After lunch, we pottered along State Street, window shopping and people watching on this lovely sunny Sunday afternoon.  the Anthropologie windows were a slight variation on the Santa Monica branch displays – the wrapped yarn was the same theme, but the “mopheads?”

DSC01321

There were quite a few charming shops along the street and we all agreed, if we decide on a Californian roadtrip, then Santa Barbara would make a great stopping place for a couple of days.

DSC01323

The greenery on both sides of the street, the cute shops and the ocean at the end of the road all combine to make this a pretty place to be.

DSC01341

Driving back the freeway, we spotted the first pumpkin patch of the season – a huge one, too.

DSC01343

Then, having dropped Mary off in time for her to prepare her classes for tomorrow, we continued on our way back to Santa Monica until our progress was stopped by the fire department attending an emergency there in front of us.  A bit of a mystery however, because although the firemen were climbing that long elevated ladder, there were people standing on the balconies in that very same building taking photos of them.  What was going on, we had no idea.  Maybe we will find out tomorrow.

DSC01346

We chose to eat Chinese food tonight, in PF Changs, but the food was so very disappointing we called over the waiter and said so.  Enter one restaurant manager, full of apologies who immediately offered dinner on the house – which was generous but actually the right action, we thought.  Only then did it occur to us that the manager had been speaking to another couple nearby who then left without paying as well.  Not one of that particular restaurant’s better nights, I’d say.

As we left and walked across the top of 3rd St Promenade, we heard music and looked across to see a large group of people dancing salsa in the street.  We’d have gone over and joined them but we were so very tired...

Just time to upload the photos, write a blog and zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Hooray for Hollywood!

We woke to clearer skies this morning.  The “MegaDoppler” weather report said the marine layer would soon burn off and they were proved correct, because by the time we were out on our way, the skies were blue and everything was tickety boo.

DSC01278

First things first – a visit to Starbucks for hot drinks, enjoyed in spite of the dire warnings

DSC01276

Oh California, we love you so Winking smile

DSC01277

Anyway, fortified by our carcinogenic beverages, we headed into the city, towards Mary’s.  There weren’t so many people around at this early hour.

DSC01282

Waiting to turn onto Sunset, we did our usual ogle of the house on the hill.  Who lives in a house like that?

DSC00316

An hour or so later, we were off out for breakfast, to one of our favourite haunts – Canters

DSC00318

This is a long standing LA favourite and offers traditional fare – it’s the choosing that’s the problem, because the menu is extensive.

DSC00319

We eventually settle for cheese blintzes for me, waffles for Mary and Corned Beef Hash for you-know-who.  Delicious.

DSC00338

By now it was getting towards lunchtime and we headed for the area between Hollywood and Highland, now a fairly new shopping mall with a vaguely Egyptian theme.  We weren’t here to shop, more to ensure a place to park the car for the afternoon, because this part of Hollywood is prime tourist territory and we really didn’t want to encounter difficulties later.

DSC00339

The “mall” has a pathway running through it with short tales of success and stardom. These quotes are not attributed to any individual, though it’s fairly easy to guess who is being quoted in a couple of them.  Most are of the “dream came true” type of story, generally overlooking the years of hard work and/or rejection and failure before achieving stardom.  Yes, we are in LaLaLand.

DSC00340

We love it though and thought it fun to spy the Hollywood sign up there on the hillside opposite.

DSC00346

Whilst the children played in the fountains – it was getting quite hot by now – we enjoyed a cool drink in the shade before heading down to the Kodak Theatre, same place as the Oscars are held each year.  Lucky for us, Mary had got tickets for the hottest of shows right now – Cirque du Soleil’s $100 million Iris.  Only recently opened, we were delighted that, after several year’s dithering about a visit to see this altogether different circus from our “usual” one, we were finally going to see it for ourselves.

DSC00352

All I can suggest is that you take a look at the website and get a flavour of this amazing show – no photos of course.  We were all three of us utterly gobsmacked by the whole spectacle; at times there was so much happening, it was hard to know where to look.  The costumes and characterisation were superb, the performance and production beyond all expectation and at times we gasped with amazement and delight at the skill of the performers and the clever concepts which had been created.

What can I say but “wow”!

How could we follow that?  Late afternoon was no time to be starting something fresh, so we returned to Mary’s apartment and simply relived as many details of the show as we could remember – whilst I was scribbling madly into my small notebook to record them!

DSC00362

Of course, we were hungry too, so we made a short drive to The Counter for a bite to eat before dropping Mary off at her home and braving the traffic from the Hollywood Bowl right opposite.  Santana were playing there tonight and though I would down the windows to try to hear something of their music on this warm, still evening, there was none to be heard. We carried on past the Bowl and went back to Santa Monica and “home”.

What an amazing day – will we ever lose the buzz of driving back along Wilshire and simply being in this great city?

Last day

DSC00661

Being a creature of habit, I always walk on the same side of the street, so on this, my last morning in NYC for a while, I crossed the road and got an altogether different view from the usual.

DSC00660

Actually, I went over to see what was going on beneath this, the National Debt sign.  Since we started coming here to New York, we’ve seen those figures increase and this morning, following the events in government last evening, there was a bit of a hoohah going on there on the street.

DSC00662

I didn’t linger however, having important business to attend to further down 6th Avenue.  I did stop to watch this chap in an elevated platform string a ?nylon cord across the street from one lamppost to another, though – the Extended Manhattan Eruv, I learned from the policeman standing on the same street corner, watching the goings on with the same curiosity as I.

DSC00664

My business was there in Toho Shoji though.  Newly extended, I found what I was after and though I would have liked to have lingered, I still hadn’t eaten breakfast.  I’d packed up as much as I could, put clothes for the flight in the top of my suitcase and checked out of the hotel, thinking that I’d get what I needed and eat in whatever time I had left.

DSC00665

When I arrived in class, all was quiet and cool.  The perfect time for dealing with a tricky and, for me, challenging, overprint of the “Tolstoy’s Ceiling” image I’d done on the brown kraft paper a couple of days ago.  I wasn’t happy with the indistinct image and so prepared another layer in black and white, which I hoped would bring out the architectural detail a little more.  I measured carefully, I checked all the print settings and held my breath as I loaded the paper.

DSC00668

Not bad, eh?  I don’t seem to have taken a photograph of the finished piece – it will have to come later and in the meantime, you’ll have to believe me that it looks a whole lot better than it did.  It’s still not a spectacular piece, but it represents a shift-change in my ability to control the print outcome, so for me, it’s an important piece of work.

DSC00670

No time to bask in glory, however, because there’s more to do.  I’d made a list of the remaining goals to be achieved and one of them was to print and apply the gel substrate we’d made.  I felt that this, in particular, needed to be done in the presence of an expert!  Though I’d planned to cover a cigar box (thank you, Jordi) having watched Mary demonstrate the steps required to achieve a good end result I decided on a smaller, flatter project and bought half a dozen round capiz shells in Toho this morning.  I printed out the image I’ve called “Colombo Fields” – it’s a photoshopped image of Colombo harbour superimposed on another image of Castlegate Meadow in Gloucester, taken on my way to work one day.

DSC00671

Having sprayed it with a post-coat of Krylon to fox the image, it had to be carefully peeled off the kitchen cutting mat with the minimum of stretching.  Thankfully, it came off relatively easily – hardly any need for holding breath at all!

DSC00672

I likened this to making a sheet of clingfilm and then putting it through the printer before peeling it off and applying it to…well, whatever we fancied.  In my case, it was those six capiz shells and a couple of flat, plastic disks.  Getting it straight with no crinkles wasn’t easy and like clingfilm, it really did want to stick to itself rather than behave and stick to the surface I wanted it to stick to.

Patience needed!

DSC00689

By this time it was getting hot.  The air conditioning in the part of the building we were using had broken and with all the machinery going full tilt, the temperatures had risen to sauna levels.  The classrooms and print labs are at basement level and with no windows to open, we were getting very uncomfortable.  Installations such as the one above began to appear and a bin full of iced water was brought for us.  Time for lunch, perhaps?

DSC00676

We went out onto the "cool” street and spotted these chaps high above the street having a conversation, it appeared.  What a strange experience it was after lunch, to go from the normally hot and steamy street into an even hotter and steamier building again!  But portable air conditioners had been brought in and the temperatures were beginning to be under control again, thankfully.

DSC00682

This was important because Mary had some crucial information to share about the placement of substrates on carrier sheets, being particularly important to those of us who intended to print over the edge of the paper.

DSC00685

I wasn’t quite there yet, deciding to make my last print of the day on matte white Inkaid painted onto brown kraft paper.  This wallpaper sample from the Andaz hotel room recently fitted the paper well and the effect of printing on that matte white surface was very satisfying indeed.

DSC00687

Did I say last print of the day?  I lied!  I spotted that one of the remaining goals for the day was direct printing onto the aluminium sheeting, which had to be prepared by thorough cleaning, rubbing with steel wool and then two coats of digital ground.  Drying it swiftly became a great excuse for standing in the direct line of the fan!

DSC00690

Putting it through the printer on a carrier sheet, following Mary’s advice about printing over the edge of the metal, it was breath-holding time again.  All was going well until…

DSC00691

I heard a “click” as the metal sprung back into shape after being released from the roller and the print head scraped the last quarter of the image.  How very infuriating!  This could have been remedied by using the straight feed of the printer, the one which ensures the media being fed through doesn’t have to flex at all; the one which steadfastly refused to accept any medium at all, today, however.  So, lessons learned – and a great bit of printing nevertheless, because it can be cut down or even washed off and reprinted, should I choose.

DSC00695

Then, as if to prove that it was Friday afternoon, hot as hell down there and we were all tired, my decision to do a “quick and easy” transfer print using hand sanitiser gel into my  notebook result in the mess above.  Too much gel perhaps?  Too little patience?  Time to relax, to call it a day and to enjoy sharing what we’ve all achieved in these four, short days.

DSC00697

Believe me, there were some spectacular pieces!  Jordi recreated her masterpiece completed on the first day but spoiled in the rain on the way home.  The youngsters in the class had all worked their socks off, making the most remarkable images and really revealing their exciting artistic talents.  The rest of us sat back and proved that once again, everyone else in the room creates more interesting and well-finished results than oneself – and that’s true for each of us.  We packed our things up, said our goodbyes and thankyous and off we went.

DSC00705

For me, it was goodbye and see you soon to Jordi, a quick change of clothes in the hotel and a squeezing of artwork into my suitcase before jumping into a cab to JFK, where I sit now.  My suitcase was labelled “heavy” when I checked in, which is hardly surprising, but I managed to secure a seat on an earlier flight.

It’s been a fantastic week, full of fun and activity.  I suspect that I’ll have no difficulty sleeping on the way home!
